Twentieth century trends in moisture advection over Australia

چکیده
We have examined some of the characteristics of moisture advection and its relation to precipitation over Australia. Seasonal extremes of moisture advection have changed considerably during the latter part of the 20th century. Analysis of its skewness reveals that the relative occurrence of these events has increased. A kurtosis analysis shows that there has been a geographical shift of where the largest impact has occurred. Moisture advection is significantly correlated to precipitation over large parts of Australia, most notably in the north and west. Changes in moisture advection show strong seasonality. Comparing two periods during the latter half of the 20th century, moisture advection was reduced over large parts of Australia, primarily in the east. However, moisture advection has increased over regions in the north and west of Australia during austral summer and autumn. Significant correlation patterns of moisture advection with precipitation have also changed over the twentieth century, partly as a result of changes in the advection of moisture by the atmosphere. The most noticeable change occurs during austral autumn, where the significant correlation of moisture advection with precipitation shifts from the east in the earlier period to the west at the end of the 20th century. A somewhat opposite change occurs during winter, although the shift occurs from the west to the southeast. Changes in the spatial extent of significant negative correlations between moisture advection and precipitation over parts of New South Wales occur during spring and summer. However, since this region gets most of its spring=summer precipitation through local convective events, this does not necessarily mean that moisture advection changes are the drivers of precipitation change in the region. Other regions that show negative correlations are found predominantly downwind of regions with high orography, where lee-winds result in adiabatic compression, restricting the occurrence of precipitation.

Rapithwin, the Demon of winter and Baba Barfi An Archetypal Battle of Survival and Transformation In Iranian Children’s Literature of the Twentieth Century
Mythological and folkloric heritages of nations have often been credited with exclusively distinct identities within the realms of literary criticism. Arguing that in a nation like Iran, the firmly visible borders that have conventionally defined mythology in disparity from folklore have been disturbed, this paper considers these two entities as intertwined and their accentuated differe...
متن کاملAn assessment of recent trends in Australian rainfall
Studies over the last decade into Australian rainfall have often noted the presence of long-term and shortterm trends but have rarely identified any statistically significant trends, mainly because the data are characterised by high interannual variability. The only exception is the southwest region of Western Australia (SWWA) where a relatively sudden decrease in winter season (and annual) rai...
متن کاملEvaluation of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment soil moisture simulations for the second half of the twentieth century
[1] Soil moisture trends, particularly during the growing season, are an important possible consequence of global warming. Climate model simulations of future soil moisture changes should be made with models that can produce reliable simulations of soil moisture for past climate changes. In this paper, we compare soil moisture simulations from Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth As...

The diurnal range of surface air temperature (DTR) has decreased worldwide during the last 4–5 decades and changes in cloud cover are often cited as one of the likely causes. To determine how clouds and moisture affect DTR physically on daily bases, the authors analyze the 30-min averaged data of surface meteorological variables and energy fluxes from the the First International Satellite Land ...
